In this course, we often speak about society and identity. Just yesterday, we watched the most interesting documentary on gangs and how they operate in jail and outside the bars of justice. In this piece a man was questioned about his identity. He was asked if he would classify himself as a cape coloured. His response was as follows: “under the apartheid system, he was classified as a cape coloured, a nothing, I’m used to it. I’m proud to be a coloured but it looks like our standards have become lower since the Apartheid days. The Blacks come first, then the whites, and only then the coloureds.”
This statement struck me, as what he said was nothing but true. Often the coloured people in society are looked at as gangsters or thieves. Yes, this whole documentary evolved around colored people but have we asked about the reasons for their actions? The Coloured people of South Africa have been pushed aside, could this gangsterism problem be a result of that? could it be an outcry by the coloured people to get some attention from the government and from fellow citizens.
