The South African government needs to “take a hard look” at its race-fuelled myopia and create the conditions that encouraged productive South Africans — including whites and minority groups — to stay and contribute to growth, says official opposition Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon.

In his regular online column on Friday, SA Today, Leon noted that the South African Institute of Race Relations had reported that about a fifth of white South Africans had left the country in the last 10 years and noted that “given a globalising world in which skilled individuals as well as capital investment are more mobile than ever before, and are maximizing their careers by moving elsewhere, government needs to take a hard look at its race-fuelled myopia, and create the conditions that encourage productive South Africans to stay and contribute to growth — which in the longer term is the only real answer to joblessness and poverty”.

The DA leader argued that “rather than discouraging these citizens from staying, moreover, the state should be actively and energetically soliciting the world’s very best practitioners in tackling the enormous problems that currently beset us in so many areas”.

All must be included and valued. He said: “In short: government needs to reassess its message so that all feel included and valued. Foot-dragging at best and vindictiveness at worst undermines all of our futures – most especially those South Africans for too long disadvantaged by our apartheid legacy and whose interests the ruling party professedly wants to advance.

MYTH: Egyptians were white

This is the longest myth ever in existence, which is pedaled as true scholarship and truth. Yet it is an outright myth, deliberately created from 1830 onwards, to explain away Egyptian civilization. During the 1800′s there was all kinds of pseudo-sciences floating around about the genetical and inherent inferiority of peoples of African descent, and also a belief blacks are to be colonized because they are uncivilized and savage by nature. This was created to justify colonialism and also denying blacks equal rights in America. In order to moralize their mistreatment of blacks, scientific racism was created. And a part of this was in denying blacks had ever had a civilization. Since Egypt was a very impressive and marvelous civilization, and much of the heritage of the western world (such as writing and the calendar) came from ancient Egypt, it became necessary to whiten Egypt.

But the truth is, the ancient Egyptians were not white. Neither were they pure black. The ancient Egyptians were a mixed-race people, especially in Upper Egypt, where Egyptian civilization began. While the earliest inhabitants, the Tasians, are believed to have been of Cro-Magnoid stock, the predynastic Badarian period which starts at 5500 B.C. in Upper Egypt, was quite Negroid. Carleton S. Coon calls the predynastic Egyptian population of Upper Egypt during the Badarian period “Mediterrenean” and denies any black admixture, on account of their thick and wavy hair. But thin and wavy hair is Caucasion hair. Wavy hair that is thick in texture is typical of peoples with African ancestry. The hair-type Coon described can be found amongst many modern-day Nubians, as well as some Northern Ethiopians, and a number of persons of mixed ancestry in Latin America, the Caribbean, and even in the United States. And besides, he described the crania of the Badarian skulls he studied as being dolichocephalic, with short faces, blurred margin (broad noses), and prognathisms. These are distinctly Negroid traits, and are undeniable evidence of black admixture. As for the hair of predynastic Upper Egyptian of the Badarian period, recent studies of their hair, show them to be semi-frizzy, like Mulattoes and many Northeast Africans. [Keita, S.O.Y. Studies and "Comments on Ancient Egyptian Biological Relationships," History of Africa 20, p.140] Of the Badarian predynastic Egyptian population, other scholars do not hesitate to call the characteristics of the crania as Negroid and as being due to African ancestry. Dr. Childe V. Gordon, a British anthropologist, spoke of the Negroid traits in Badarian crania. Other Egyptologists and anthropologists have noted the same. Dr. Emile Massourlard, a French Egyptologist, published a work in 1949 called[ “Prehistoire et Protohistoire d’Egypt”[ in which he cites various studies on predynastic and dynastic Egyptian culture. On the Badarians, he quotes a study by Miss Stoessiger.

Racism cannot be cured by ‘diversity’ or racial preferences — they are themselves forms of racism. The only cure: individualism. It is now taken as a virtual axiom that the way to cure racism is through the promulgation of racial and ethnic diversity within corporations, universities, government agencies and other institutions. The diversity movement has many facets: diversity awareness, diversity training, diversity hiring and admissions, diversity promotions, and diversity accommodations (e.g., black student organizations and facilities at universities). The common feature in all these facets is: racial preference.

If diversity is the cure, however, why, instead of promoting racial harmony, has it brought racial division and conflict? The answer is not hard to discover. The The unshakable fact is that. To accept the diversity premise means to think in racial terms rather than in terms of individual character or merit. Taking jobs away from one group in order to compensate a second group to correct injustices caused by a third group who mistreated a fourth group at an earlier point in history (e.g., 1860) is absurd on the face of it and does not promote justice; rather, it does the opposite. Singling out one group for special favors (e.g., through affirmative action) breeds justified resentment and fuels the prejudices of real racists. People are individuals; they are not interchangeable ciphers in an amorphous collective.

To a biologist, “race” means a very specific thing. It’s essentially a synonym for “variety”, or “sub-species”, and applies, as the name implies, to a portion of a species. Now, defining species is a massively problematic affair, and one that’s never really been settled. Nevertheless, most biologists agree that species are “real” categories, whereas other categories in the taxonomic hierarchy (Genus, Family, Order, etc.) are pretty much arbitrary.

Species are remarkably hard to define, but most people just go along with the idea that species are marked by reproductive isolation. If organisms interbreed naturally and have fertile offspring, they belong to the same species. Clearly, then, all human beings belong to the same species (as evidenced by the very existence of coloureds). No problem there. (This definition of species is tied into the recognition that gene flow and the lack thereof is the core of biodiversity, incidentally.) Now sub-species are usually defined somewhat as follows: naturally occurring and geographically distinct variants of a species.

Now once upon a time, this might have been useful. After all, the San were different to the Bantu people, who were different to the Europeans, who differed from the Chinese. Sure, there was some blurring along the borders, but mostly you could tell where people were from just by lookngi at them. But over the last five centuries or so, the world’s been getting smaller, and now we live in a “global village”, where the term “black” applies to people who live in Africa, in Europe, in America, and whose ancestors came from a myriad of places (though ultimately, we all stem from Africa) – all over the place, really.
So does it make sense to speak of the white race? Or the black race? Or, heaven forefend, the coloured race (coloureds, being mixtures, mess any attempt to speak of human sub-species up totally)?

War

What life has taught me
I would like to share with
Those who want to learn…

Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say war

That until there are no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man’s skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
Me say war

That until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
It is war

That until that day
The dream of lasting peace, world citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion
To be persued, but never attained
Now everywhere is war, war

And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique,
South Africa sub-human bondage
Have been toppled, utterly destroyed
Well, everywhere is war, me say war

War in the east, war in the west
War up north, war down south
War, war, rumours of war

And until that day, the African continent
Will not know peace, we Africans will fight
We find it necessary and we know we shall win
As we are confident in the victory

Of good over evil, good over evil, good over evil
Good over evil, good over evil, good over evil.

ALTHOUGH segregation had been part of the South African social and political landscape since European colonisers arrived in the 17th century, it was only in 1950, with the introduction of the Population Registration Act, that the state attempted to classify the entire population into fixed groups based on the false notion of race. Scientifically, there is no such thing as separate “races” — all human beings belong to the same race.

In South Africa, race classification determined people’s voting rights, where they could reside, where they could buy or sell property, their social status, the jobs for which they could apply, the amount of their pension and the quality of their children’s education. When it was first passed in 1950, the Population Registration Act defined racial groups relatively loosely. A coloured person was defined as “a person who is not a white person nor generally accepted as a member of aboriginal race or tribe of Africa”.

However, the Act was revised at least six times to tighten loopholes. “Race” was no longer judged only on appearance, but also according to line of descent. Amendments to the Act sub-divided coloured South Africans into further different categories such as Cape Coloured, Cape Malay, Griqua, Chinese and “other coloured”. After the Population Registration Act became law, the classification of whites and coloureds in Cape Town was carried out by the Electoral Officer. Later, in January 1958, a Population Registration Office was opened.

The Population Registration Act determined people’s race classification, which in turn determined the implementation of many other racially based laws. For example, the Group Areas Act determined where people of different racial groups could live. It did not permit mixing of any groups. Thus, any woman who married or lived with a member of someone from another “racial” group would, in terms of the Group Areas Act, be deemed to belong to the racial group of the man involved, except if the man were white. In that case, the man took on the racial group of the woman and would need to be re-classified before being allowed to live in that Group Area.

In February 1958 the Cape Times reported the Minister of the Interior as saying that the Population Registration Act was assisting people by removing uncertainty and unease and the “clouds which hovered over them”. However, at the end of 1961 the newspaper reported that there were at least 20 000 people in the Cape Peninsula who were still uncertain whether they were officially “white” or “coloured”. The first Race Classification Review Board was established in 1954. In September 1959 the minister announced that the board of review was to be replaced by special appeal boards to be set up in the Transvaal, Cape Province and possibly Natal.
